Earth Day began on April 22, 1970, at a time when environmentalists were a rare breed indeed. Slowly but surely over the ensuing decades, the Green movement has gained more momentum and more participants, shedding its mantle of the eccentric and offbeat along the way. Now, with global changes and reduction in resources becoming more evident by the month, recycling and 'being green' is no longer the eccentric exception.

Going green does not have to be painful. In fact, in order to move from a 'normal' life to a greener one, you can start by taking just a handful of tiny steps that we like to call Micro Steps. Micro Steps are small changes you can make to your everyday life patterns - easy to do one or two to start, and they all add up over time.

When each of us contributes in some small way, each and every day, we make a difference. It doesn't happen overnight, but it does happen over time. Thank you for doing what you can, each and every day, to make your part of the world a greener place.

Here are a few Micro Steps you can start with...
  • Re-Use
Toss bread wrapper closers in a small jar near the sink, instead of tossing them into the trash. Next time you need to close a bag, grab one from your handy supply instead of using a fresh tie wrap.

  • Re-Use
Save plastic butter dishes and their lids, and use them to store leftovers. A small strip of freezer tape makes a good label - just write down the contents and a date.

  • Re-Use
Instead of tossing out a wobbly chair, grab the wood glue and a roll of twine. With a few minutes of work and some drying time, you can secure the wobbly bits (often a loose leg or a crossbar), and your chair can be good as new.

  • Reduce
Swap out your old incandescent bulbs, and replace them with energy efficient compact fluorescents. They'll last a LOT longer, use a LOT less power, and save a LOT of money in the long run.

  • Recycle
Sort your trash, and send recyclables on their way back into service. Check with your waste management service for bins and instructions - or get your own sorting center set up and go to town (or wherever the local recycling center happens to be)!
